COVID-19 consequences of deferred care
The first confirmed case relating to COVID-19 in the United States occurred in Washington in January of 2020. By March, the governors of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho had all issued statewide stay-at-home orders to help reduce infection spread.
During 2020 many people avoided doctor visits—including routine testing and essential screening—due to stay-at-home orders, temporary closures, and general fear of exposure to the virus.

The risks of deferred care
Analysis of data from Quest Diagnostics’ extensive clinical laboratory database shows drops in important preventive routine testing and screening in the Pacific Northwest states. Below are two examples of such drops year-over-year from 2019 to 2020.

A missed diagnosis can mean detection at a more advanced stage, which may result in poorer prognoses.

For some undiagnosed STIs, cases of otherwise minimally harmful infections can lead to serious conditions if left untreated.
